Dave: I bought a 1950 Commodore about 8 weeks ago. It has been garaged and well maintained it's entire life. It has a rebuilt 308, a new wiring harness and an Echlin electronic ignition (Part #2174 6V Pos) which may or may not be significant. It runs perfectly and the only concern I had was the windshield wipers. You gave me advice on how to repair them; but, I must wait until Spring. I was gaining great confidence in the car until a few days ago. I was driving in a light rain with the parking lights on when suddenly the engine died. Attempting a restart was to no avail as the starter was not hot and the red amp warning light was not on with the ignition key turned on. As soon as I turned the parking lights off, the amp warning light turned on and the starter button was hot. I drove the car home and then turned on the lights and the car died with either the parking lights or the headlights on. At this point, the parking lights were blinking and it sounded like a relay was clicking. Headlights were fine and bright. The motor ran fine without the lights on. I disconnected the battery as I was concerned about a potential fire hazard. The next day, I started the car with no problem and was unable to reproduce the problem when the lights were turned on. I might also note that the overdrive solenoid wire had been a problem but was rectified and the car was reliable since being repaired. Do you have any idea what might have been going on? I lost a lot of confidence in the car when this happened and I'd like to be able to drive it with confidence, at night, and even in the rain this Spring. Thank you in advance for your support and advice.
